Public forum to update Pinetown residents

The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry will host the GO!Durban team at the Premier Hotel in Pinetown on Tuesday, 4 November 2014 at 3pm in an endeavour to give citizens clarity of the GO!Durban development.

GO!Durban, the Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN), is the single largest transport infrastructure project in South Africa. The project has a “wall to wall” network plan including key strategies, plans and projects integrating specialist and supporting work streams that will unlock the flagship corridors known as C1, C2, C3 and C9 with construction already underway on Corridor C3 (Bridge City, KwaMashu to Pinetown).

Major construction is currently taking place in Pinetown along Josiah Gumede Road, as it is being rebuilt to allow for dedicated BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) lanes and transfer stations for articulated buses that will use these routes.

As the project is already under construction in this area with commuters, residents and businesses being affected by the construction, both the DCCI and the GO!Durban project team will host this engagement with citizens to help provide answers to the many concerns and queries they may have.

Empowerment Charter workshop 2014

In a bold move for the transport sector, GO!Durban, the city’s integrated rapid public transport network (IRPTN), one of the largest infrastructure projects in South Africa, unveiled its unique Empowerment Charter after a day’s workshop with various stakeholders. The Empowerment Charter is not a preferencing policy, nor an embellishment of the BEE regulations, but is a series of additional specifications added by the GO!Durban project to all contracts awarded on the project. These additional clauses are targeted at addressing unemployment, poverty and inequality in the Metro.

The Mayor called on citizens in the spirit and context of empowerment, to “dare to care” not only about their individual needs, but the needs of those around them. “I ask you to lend a thought to the millions, that my station mandates that I serve, who are caught in between your needs and desires.  I ask you to care for them, and see beyond your needs and requirements to their needs and requirements and invite them to participate in the economy that you have created around yourself, your business or organisation.”

“In my mind ‘empowerment’ is the manner in which we give our citizens the tools to better themselves in a moral and accountable way,” said the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Nomvuzo Shabalala, who opened the proceedings. “The GO!Durban Empowerment Charter has been crafted to specifically address both the complexity of a new Public Transport System and to ensure that fair opportunity is given through several different platforms.”

Non-Motorised Transport Programme rolls out alongside GO!Durban

“This is a City for People not a City for cars”, was the message given by His Worship the Mayor of the eThekwini Municipality, Councillor James Nxumalo, echoing the vision of the City of Curitiba, Brazil, at the launch of the City’s Non-Motorised Transport Network today at the Green Hub in Durban. He reaffirmed the City’s “commitment for the development of public transport infrastructure plans to harness people power to propel themselves forward.”

Most cities in the world that have improved their transportation infrastructure by creating sustainable integrated rapid public transport networks have included a Non-Motorised Transport component. This includes all means of transport that are “human powered” like walking, and cycling, and variants such as roller skates, skateboards, push scooters and hand carts, as well as wheelchair travel, but also includes “animal powered” such as horse and carriage drawn transport.
