Qashana Khuzwayo road to Dinkelman / Otto Volek road

The ETA would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by these delays. As a result current works along Qashana Khuzwayo Road, from Josiah Gumede (Old Main Road) to Dinkelman (Otto Volek) Road, are now anticipated to finish by March 2017.

The contractor will endeavour to minimise the impact of the work on the property accesses in the vicinity of this project and is doing their utmost to catch up on the time lost.

Construction on Anderson Road and Josiah Gumede Road

It was previously advised that during September 2016, the intersections along Josiah Gumede Road, between Anderson and Beviss would be under construction.

Due to disruptions and delays that were beyond the control of the eThekwini Transport Authority, the road works and services relocation related to the GO!Durban project along Anderson and Josiah Gumede Roads have been further delayed.

Work is anticipated to be completed by the end of October 2016 in sections along this route.

Adequate signage will be continuously displayed during this period and traffic will be diverted when necessary along alternative routes to avoid congestion.

We sincerely appreciate your understanding and patience as we fast track the construction on this section. Please expect the usual construction noises and the presence of staff and heavy construction machinery. Maris Stella GO!Durban excursion

Seventy five Grade 8 learners from Maris Stella paid a visit to the GO!Durban project office to meet the team that are designing and implementing the City’s new integrated rapid public transport network. The learners, who were on assignment to research a project for their Geography syllabus, were given a presentation on the full GO!Durban programme which will network the city from east to west and north to south with a series of dedicated bus lanes, feeder and complementary bus routes and non-motorised transport pedestrian walkways, cycle lanes and pedestrian bridges, as well as an upgraded train service from KwaMashu to the City CBD to transport close to 600 000 people each day. According to Shoneeze Franks, the Manager: Transport Promotions and Media at the eThekweni Transport Authority, the learners were “fabulously up to speed on what public transport means for a city,” and they were “delightfully engaging – asking so many questions about the future of public transport for Durban, and how we were all going to benefit from the new system.”

Sustainable Living Exhibition

Every year the top businesses, initiatives and individuals in sustainable development get together to showcase their achievements and goals at the Sustainable Living Exhibition. The exhibition is an opportunity to network and inspire others to play their part.

2016 marks the third year GO!Durban will exhibit its non-motorised transport plans at the event. Non-motorised transport plays an integral role in GO!Durban’s vision for eThekwini. The city as a whole needs to develop a culture around sustainability and non-motorised transport if GO!Durban is to turn eThekwini into the most caring and liveable city in Africa. This exhibition will highlight how GO!Durban plans to make this happen.

In 2014 GO!Durban unveiled the Believe Tree. Built from recycled materials this tree became a symbol of the future GO!Durban has planned. Visitors at the exhibition were asked to write down their wishes for the future of Durban and tie them to the tree. Over 2 000 messages were received which lead to the Believe Tree winning Best Stand at the Sustainable Living Exhibition 2014. Click here for more.

Last year GO!Durban created the world’s first Foot Fuelling Station. At the stand visitors could enjoy foot rubs, reflexology, shoe shining and cleaning as well as an opportunity to refresh themselves while learning about the project. This station used feet as a conversation starter for non-motorsied transport and its benefits for both the city and our health.

This year promises to be bigger and better. GO!Durban is giving you an opportunity to experience the thrill of non-motorised transport first hand. Come see what’s in store between 19 to 21 August at the Durban Exhibition Centre.

Memorandum of Agreement between eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality and the bus operators

The Memorandum of Agreement was signed by the City Manager Sibusiso Sithole and Bus Operators represented by the Durban Bus Owners’ Association (BOA), The KwaZulu-Natal Bus Council (KWANABUCO) and the South African Bus Owners’ Association (SABOA).

In 2011, the City started engagements with the leadership of the current public transport industry to be part of a consultation process to discuss their participation in GO!Durban’s operations. The Bus Operators’ MOA will see continued discussion around the contracts for the Bus Operators who will become invested shareholders in the vehicle operating companies (VOC’s) of the IRPTN, together with the mini-bus taxi industry.

Since the launch of GO!Durban, the City has been committed to introducing a new public transport system in partnership with affected public transport operators, including the mini-bus taxi industry with an MOA signed between them and the City in February 2014.

His Worship the Mayor James Nxumalo said at the signing. “Today marks a significant milestone in terms of the rollout of this massive infrastructural programme which will benefit all the people in the City. Operators whose routes will be affected by the GO!Durban operations will have the opportunity to be included in vehicle operating companies, with which the City would negotiate and enter into a contract to operate the services as outlined in the NLTA.”

He explained that the City “is committed to negotiating with these operators with a view of contracts to a maximum of 12 years being awarded, in accordance with the National Land Transport Act, Act No 5 of 2009.”

eThekwini Safe Schools Project

An international road safety campaign is being piloted in eight schools in eThekwini, focusing on improving safety in and around these schools.

The eThekwini Safe Schools Project- Road Safety Campaign is a public-private partnership between eThekwini Municipality and the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP).

The campaign, being piloted in eight primary schools within eThekwini, focuses on improving road safety in and around these schools by introducing safe road infrastructure to and from school, road safety education for pupils and a teacher training package. This training equips teachers with the relevant road safety knowledge to be shared in their schools as well as extending this information to parents and communities.

The foundation for this project was laid in 2006, when eThekwini Transport Authority officials began visiting schools throughout the City, recording accident data, providing interactive road safety demonstrations and supporting educational material as well as upgrading infrastructure by providing sidewalks and other traffic calming measures on roads near schools.

DIAL-A-RIDE launch

The eThekwini Municipal Mayor, Councillor James Nxumalo, launched twelve custom-designed and specially adapted midibus type vehicles for the City’s Dial-A-Ride fleet, a demand responsive public transport service for People with Disabilities.

The new buses are able to take between 5 and 7 wheelchairs, as well as those on crutches in fixed seats. The buses are specially adapted with hydraulic lifts and are SABS approved to ensure safety.  As a standard training procedure, drivers and other operational staff from Vukasambe Investments, the company contracted to operate the service, go through a customer-care programme to deal with people with disabilities.

To further support the demand, the City currently has 3 Sukuma buses, which are designed to take wheelchairs, and to transport people with other special needs on fixed routes.
