eThekwini Safe Schools Project

An international road safety campaign is being piloted in eight schools in eThekwini, focusing on improving safety in and around these schools.

The eThekwini Safe Schools Project- Road Safety Campaign is a public-private partnership between eThekwini Municipality and the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP).

The campaign, being piloted in eight primary schools within eThekwini, focuses on improving road safety in and around these schools by introducing safe road infrastructure to and from school, road safety education for pupils and a teacher training package. This training equips teachers with the relevant road safety knowledge to be shared in their schools as well as extending this information to parents and communities.

The foundation for this project was laid in 2006, when eThekwini Transport Authority officials began visiting schools throughout the City, recording accident data, providing interactive road safety demonstrations and supporting educational material as well as upgrading infrastructure by providing sidewalks and other traffic calming measures on roads near schools.

Ethekwini forum prioritise safety plan for cyclists

The eThekwini Cycle Safe Forum was launched Wednesday, 10 February 2016, at Blue Lagoon where concerned stakeholders came together to develop a safety plan for cyclists.

The interim forum was jointly established by eThekwini Municipality and a number of Durban cycling clubs concerned about the safety of cyclists in the City. The forum hopes to address the current challenges facing cyclists in and around Durban and find solutions to effectively deal with these issues.

Some of the challenges raised by cyclists included the lack of awareness of motorists to be aware of cyclists on the road and to keep a safe distance and drunk drivers who endangered the lives of all road users including cyclists.

Head of International and Governance Relations for eThekwini Eric Apelgren said the forum will be made up of relevant stakeholders including organised cycle clubs from Durban and government stakeholders including the Department of Transport and the Road Traffic Inspectorate, to help make decisions and carry them forward.

The eThekwini Cycle Safe Forum also appealed to recreational cyclists to abide by the rules of the road and Municipal bylaws to ensure that safety is achieved for all.

Avoca Hills road deviation

The eThekwini Municipality is in the process of dramatically improving public transport within the City of Durban. The overall goal is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Durban through the construction of a world class integrated rapid public transport network (IRPTN). Forming part of the network is Route C3, which will connect the areas of Bridge City and Pinetown with one another.

Stefanutti Stocks Five and Only Development Consortium have been appointed for the construction of a portion of IRPTN Route C3. This section is approximately 4.2km long and extends along the MR577 from KwaMashu in the west to the MR577 / M25 intersection to the east. Included in the scope of works is the construction of a BRT bus station situated at the intersection of Avoca Hills Drive and the MR577.

In order to allow for the construction of the BRT station, traffic flow will be rerouted as follows: Eastbound traffic on the MR577 will temporarily be diverted onto the westbound carriageway as from Monday, 15th of February 2016 and a termination detour date (estimated) of Wednesday, 15th June 2016

Progress update

The construction of the Integrated Rapid Transport Network (IRPTN) through Pinetown, an initiative by the eThekwini Municipality to provide a public transport system for the citizens of Durban, is advancing well. Part of the construction of this IRPTN requires the widening of St Johns Bridge in Josiah Gumede Road.

People traveling past the bridge will see how the new bridge, which will include a new single point intersection on top and the IRPTN going through underneath, is taking shape. The construction team has for long periods battled to relocate existing services that are sometimes eighty years old.

The underpass (Old Main Rd) was narrowed to allow one IRPTN lane in each direction which will be dedicated for the Go!Durban busses. The bridge deck was widened by approximately 15m on each side to accommodate the extra lanes that will be required. Service ducts to accommodate existing and future services have been installed already. New precast concrete barriers are being installed on the new retaining walls. Sections of the road have been built with new selected layers, sub base and base course. Divider kerbs which will be separating the busses from other public road users are being installed. New kerbs and channels with neat sidewalks will finish off the high quality road. Stormwater lines have been laid in difficult conditions between all these services to ensure proper drainage of the new roads.
