Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) refers to active, human-powered modes of travel that do not rely on an engine or motor. Promoting NMT supports a people-centred, accessible, and sustainable city. It reduces traffic congestion, lowers emissions, improves public health, and provides affordable connections to the broader public transport network.
The City of Durban continues to strengthen its commitment to NMT as part of a fully integrated transport system—one that brings buses, taxis, trains, cycling, and walking together into a seamless, efficient network. Through GO!Durban, the City is investing in dedicated pedestrian and cycling infrastructure that provides safer routes and convenient links to public transport. These improvements encourage residents to choose active travel for daily commuting, recreation, and community mobility.
NMT includes a wide range of human-powered transport options, such as: Walking, Cycling, Running, Small-wheeled transport (skates, skateboards, push scooters, hand carts) and Wheelchair travel.
By prioritising NMT, the City promotes healthier living, reduces congestion, and supports a more inclusive and environmentally responsible transport system.
